Passengers board a flydubai flight, bound for Dubai, before taking off from Ben Gurion Airport near Tel Aviv on September 30, 2026.
A bipartisan resolution introduced in the House of Representatives on Tuesday honors the pilot and passengers who helped avert the attempted hijacking of FlyDubai flight 1073 last week.
During last Wednesday’s flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv, an Omani copilot stabbed the other pilot in the cockpit and attempted to seize control of the aircraft. Pilot Smit Machchhar, despite his injuries, held off the attacker and unlocked the cockpit door, allowing passengers and crew to enter and restrain the copilot and off-duty pilots onboard to safely land the aircraft.
The resolution, led by Reps. Josh Gottheimer (D-NJ), Michael McCaul (R-TX) and Don Bacon (R-NE), honors Machchhar, an Indian national, for his “extraordinary courage in protecting every soul aboard his aircraft” and “commends the heroic actions” of all those who helped end the attack and safely land the plane.
It condemns the attack as “an act of terrorism and as an attack on the safety of international civil aviation” and urges a “full and expeditious investigation” by the Saudi and Emirati governments, and for the U.S. and Israel to be kept apprised of that investigation.
The resolution also offers wishes for a full recovery to Machchhar and others who were injured in the attack. Machchhar is reported to be recovering from his serious wounds in a hospital in the UAE.
