Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) will campaign alongside Michigan Democratic Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed next week, joining him for a bus tour across the state’s Upper Peninsula before holding several rallies in the Detroit area on Friday.
Ocasio-Cortez and El-Sayed are scheduled to make stops on Thursday in Escanaba, Iron Mountain and Marquette as part of his campaign’s “Shouldn’t Be This Hard” tour. On Friday, the congresswoman will hold rallies at Oakland University in Rochester and Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti, along with a “Latinos for Abdul” event in Detroit.
The trip will mark Ocasio-Cortez’s first campaign appearance for El-Sayed during the general election, following her endorsement and appearances on his behalf during the Democratic primary. El-Sayed faces former Rep. Mike Rogers (R-MI), who narrowly lost Michigan’s 2024 Senate race, in a closely watched contest for the seat being vacated by retiring Sen. Gary Peters (D-MI).
At a New York City fundraiser for El-Sayed earlier this week, Ocasio-Cortez described his campaign as part of a broader “generational project” for the progressive movement, according to audio obtained by The New York Times. She argued that an El-Sayed victory would “break open the entire political calculus” of what progressives could accomplish.
“Because if you can win, if Abdul can win in Michigan, anybody can win anywhere,” Ocasio-Cortez said.
Ocasio-Cortez, who is thought to be considering a potential 2028 presidential bid, has become a prominent ally of El-Sayed as Republicans have sought to portray him as too liberal for the swing state of Michigan.
El-Sayed welcomed Ocasio-Cortez’s support, praising her leadership and calling her a “critical partner in the primary.” Former President Barack Obama is also scheduled to campaign with El-Sayed on Oct. 24.
