State Rep. Noah Arbit said that Piker’s targeting of West Bloomfield, Mich., where the Temple Israel terrorist attack took place, will place the community in danger, and El-Sayed and others must condemn it

In a screaming rant on his livestream on Friday, antisemitic influencer Hasan Piker compared the heavily Jewish community of West Bloomfield in the Detroit suburbs to a Ku Klux Klan neighborhood, describing it as full of Jewish supremacists.

State Rep. Noah Arbit, who represents the community in the state legislature, told Jewish Insider that Piker’s words may incite violence against his community and that elected officials and candidates must clearly repudiate them.

Piker, while watching a news segment about West Bloomfield and a group of canvassers for Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed in the district, said, “I don’t think this is insensitive to say — this is the equivalent of going to that like KKK neighborhood to stump for a Black candidate who’s running expressly … to abolish anti-miscegenation laws.”

He said that, while the Jewish community in West Bloomfield might be aesthetically different, “the supremacist attitude underlying their worldview is identical. … It’s racial supremacy. It’s Jewish supremacy.”

“Thank god they probably don’t own any guns,” he added.

Responding to a person interviewed in the news segment who said that maintaining Israel as a safe haven for Jews is important to the Jewish community, Piker began shouting.

“Look at how beautiful your neighborhood is. What are you talking about, having a safe haven? You would never live in Israel … Even the thought of it disgusts you,” he continued. “If it’s so dangerous, go live in Israel. Oh you won’t?”

He continued, “You f***ing idiot, you f***ing moron, you’re making this place that you live less safe and worse overall by voting for a f***ing Republican. … ‘I’m voting at the behest of Israel for Mike Rogers, who is the Christian version of Itamar Ben-Gvir.’ What is wrong with you? You f***ing psycho. What the f*** are you talking about? You’d never live in Israel, but now you’re f***ing up America. America is going to resemble all the worst qualities of Israel that you don’t like.”

Arbit told Jewish Insider that he found the clip, “disgusting, repugnant,” “insane,” “irresponsible” and an “incitement to violence.”

“This is exactly the kind of rhetoric that will breed violence,” he said. “Talking about West Bloomfield’s Jewish community as if it is the KKK, some white supremacist community, is exactly the kind of vile, dangerous, radicalizing rhetoric that will no doubt encourage people who have already been radicalized to come and take up violence against us.”

West Bloomfield is home to Temple Israel, the site of a Hezbollah-inspired terrorist attack earlier this year. Arbit said that local police will need to be notified about the clip and that the community will have to take extra precautions after having been singled out in such a way.

Arbit also emphasized that the clip is likely to hurt El-Sayed in the closing days of the campaign, “to attack the character of a community that is going to be a pivotal community in the election on Tuesday.” Arbit has said he plans to leave his ballot blank for the Senate race.

“This is exactly why we have asked Abdul El-Sayed time and time again to disavow Hasan Piker. I don’t believe that Abdul believes those things about West Bloomfield Township, but this was one of his biggest campaign surrogates,” Arbit said. “It is his responsibility to disavow these attacks on people that Abdul hoped will be his constituents.”

He said that not only El-Sayed but any candidate, regardless of party affiliation, running in the state “should have no problem unequivocally denouncing these putrid, vile comments about my community.”

“Every person, especially those who have counted on this person as an ally, as someone that they have campaigned with, needs to denounce these comments immediately,” Arbit continued. “Because it puts my community — not just the Jewish community of West Bloomfield but every person in West Bloomfield — in danger.”

He added in a Facebook post that the sentiments expressed by Piker are antithetical to what his community stands for.

“West Bloomfield is a bulwark against his hate, and we will never, ever allow hate — his or anyone else’s — to overwhelm us or distract us from continuing to build the wonderful, strong community that we are,” he said.
