Rep. Jimmy Gomez speaks in support of Los Angeles Unified School District teachers and education workers as they plan to strike against the second-largest school district in the nation at the L.A. County Federation of Labor in Los Angeles on Wednesday, April 1, 2026.

Angela Gonzales-Torres, a Democratic Socialists of America member and anti-Israel activist running against Rep. Jimmy Gomez (D-CA) in a Los Angeles-based district, became the latest candidate to appear with antisemitic influencer Hasan Piker, joining his livestream on Friday.

Gonzales-Torres has staked out positions sharply critical of Israel on the campaign trail including supporting the Block the Bombs Act, embracing an arms embargo and accusing Israel of genocide. She was a member of the anti-Israel encampment at the University of California, Los Angeles.

In addition to her DSA affiliation, Gonzales-Torres has been endorsed by TrackAIPAC and the Justice Democrats. She has blasted Gomez over support he has received in the past from AIPAC and other pro-Israel groups, encouraging allies on her website’s “red box” — used by candidates to send messages to super PACs with which they cannot directly coordinate — to attack him over those relationships.

“One of the most horrifying atrocities actively happening right now is the genocide in Gaza that the Israeli military is only able to commit with the financial and political support of the US government,” her campaign site states. “Unlike her opponent, Angela refuses to let AIPAC buy her silence in the face of genocide, apartheid, and famine. She will fight for an immediate arms embargo, ceasefire, and a massive influx of humanitarian aid to end this genocide and deliver on the promise of Palestinian freedom and self-determination. … [She] will never vote to send weapons to the Israeli military.”

Gomez, meanwhile, is urging allies to highlight Gonzales-Torres’ appearance with Piker.

“Angela Gonzales-Torres is campaigning and raising money with an online political influencer who has proclaimed that ‘America deserved 9/11,’” his campaign site states. “Gonzales-Torres proactively chose to campaign with this political influencer even though he maintains that the ‘U.S. is worse than Al-Qaeda.’”

Gomez finished first in the all-party primary with 46% of the vote, easily outdistancing Gonzales-Torres, who won 31% of the vote. But internal polls by Gonzales-Torres and a group supporting her in early September and early October showed her ahead, by three points in September and 10 points in October.

Gomez is currently facing a House Ethics Committee investigation after being accused of sexual harassment and assault, including inappropriate sexual contact with a House staffer. Gomez has acknowledged infidelity but insisted that any such activity was consensual and did not violate the law or House rules.

In his 2024 race, Gomez received support from the AIPAC-affiliated United Democracy Project super PAC to defeat a three-time progressive challenger. Such support has not yet materialized in this race and Gonzales-Torres has been the primary beneficiary of outside funding, particularly from Guardrails Alliance, a group pushing AI regulation.

Gomez opposed an effort to cut U.S. aid to Israel earlier this year.

The Justice Democrats and Working Families Party have also spent relatively small amounts to boost Gonzales-Torres and attack Gomez. Gomez, meanwhile, has seen some support from Latino community PACs.
