A new poll found support for the Democratic Party decreasing among Jewish voters in New York City and a widespread view among Jewish New Yorkers that the Democratic Socialists of America are hostile to Jews.
The poll, by the Honan Strategy Group, of 503 Jewish voters — a subsample of a poll of 1,167 likely New York City voters conducted from Oct. 2 to 6 — found that 51% of New York City Jewish voters said their support for the Democratic Party has grown weaker since Hamas’ Oct. 7, 2023, attacks on Israel. Only 9% said that their support for the party had grown stronger, 27% said it had stayed the same and 12% said that they had never supported Democrats.
A majority of Jewish voters, 61%, also described the DSA as hostile to the interests of Jewish people, with 53% characterizing the DSA as “very hostile.” Thirty percent said they saw the DSA as friendly.
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, a DSA member, has had a rocky relationship with the mainstream Jewish community.
The survey found a significant difference in support for the Democratic Party among non-Jewish voters: only 26% of non-Jewish voters said their support for the party had grown weaker since Oct. 7 and 19% said it had grown stronger.
Jewish voters offered similar verdicts on the Democratic and Republican parties: 54% said the Democratic Party is friendly to Jewish interests and 46% called it hostile, while 51% said the Republican Party is friendly to Jewish interests and 49% said it is hostile.
Survey respondents were contacted by text and completed the survey online.
