Angela Gonzales-Torres, the Democratic Socialists of America member challenging Rep. Jimmy Gomez (D-CA), scored a decisive win over the Los Angeles Democrat in Tuesday’s midterm elections.
Gonzales-Torres led by 18 points, 59%-41%, with 73% of the vote counted as of Wednesday afternoon in the race for the 34th Congressional District. She was a member of the anti-Israel encampment on the UCLA campus, called for an arms embargo on Israel and accused Israel of genocide on the campaign trail.
She likely benefitted from an ongoing House Ethics Committee investigation into Gomez for alleged sexual assault and harassment.
Gonzales-Torres picked up support from the Justice Democrats and TrackAIPAC, blasted Gomez for receiving support from AIPAC and other pro-Israel groups and campaigned repeatedly with Hasan Piker, including a canvassing event the weekend before the election.
“One of the most horrifying atrocities actively happening right now is the genocide in Gaza that the Israeli military is only able to commit with the financial and political support of the US government,” her campaign site stated. “Unlike her opponent, Angela refuses to let AIPAC buy her silence in the face of genocide, apartheid, and famine. She will fight for an immediate arms embargo, ceasefire, and a massive influx of humanitarian aid to end this genocide and deliver on the promise of Palestinian freedom and self-determination. … [She] will never vote to send weapons to the Israeli military.”
Meanwhile, two other far-left California Democrats are lagging behind in the polls, though neither race has yet been called.
In the 7th District in the Sacramento area, Rep. Doris Matsui (D-CA) holds a substantial lead, 57%-43%, over far-left candidate Mai Vang, who also campaigned with Piker, though just 41% of votes have been counted so far. Matsui hammered Vang in the closing stage of the campaign for appearing with Piker.
And in former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s (D-CA) 11th District seat, state Sen. Scott Wiener is running more than 10 points ahead of San Francisco Supervisor Connie Chan, Pelosi’s chosen successor, 55%-45%, with 51% of the vote counted.
Wiener, who is Jewish, described the war in Gaza as a genocide amid intense left-wing pressure and antisemitic harassment. Chan leaned into Israel-related attacks that local Jewish leaders saw as playing into antisemitic tropes.
