Maine Democratic Senate candidate Troy Jackson said at a Thursday debate with Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME) that Congress should shut down funding for the Iran war in order to force the war to an end.
Several Senate Democrats have endorsed a similar approach, while others have floated other potential ways that a Democratic congressional majority could leverage its spending power and authority to end the war.
“I do think that now that we’re in this, we have to make sure that our troops are protected, thought of, make sure that we get them home safely,” Jackson said, without elaborating on what that might entail. “It’s something that we should never have gotten into, and now we just need to get out of, and do it in the most safe, effective way, and make sure our troops are protected.”
He did not directly address the question from moderators about whether the U.S. can exit the war with Iran in control of the Strait of Hormuz.
Collins, one of the few Senate Republicans who have voted for several war powers resolutions seeking to bring an end to the war, said that the administration “should have had a good plan in advance for dealing with the Strait of Hormuz.”
“Here’s what we have to do: we have to negotiate with Iran and with our allies in the region to make sure that Iran cannot continue enriching uranium to produce a nuclear weapon,” Collins continued.
Jackson subsequently emphasized that the U.S. had entered a deal with Iran during the Obama administration, but the first Trump administration withdrew from it “and now we’re stuck in another war.”
