Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) and Rep. Angie Craig (D-MN) condemned far-left streamer Hasan Piker over the weekend ahead of a planned Oct. 26 Minneapolis event with Piker, Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) and democratic socialist state Sen. Omar Fateh.
“The Senator believes that a number of the statements he has made are reckless and unacceptable,” a spokesperson for Klobuchar’s gubernatorial campaign told Jewish Insider.
Craig issued a statement on X on Saturday, the first public sign of what a source told JI is growing discontent inside state Democratic circles about the event. The source said that some Democratic leaders and party officials have been privately urging Omar and Fateh to call off the event.
“As Democrats, we constantly criticize the far-right for their incendiary and discriminatory politics, but we need to hold ourselves to the same standard,” Craig said in her statement on X. “Hasan Piker’s rhetoric is polarizing and dangerous, and embracing him as a party is a mistake. I am disappointed that Minnesota DFLers are hosting an event with him here.”
The event would take place days before the competitive Senate and gubernatorial elections in Minnesota, as well as several House races, and candidates are likely loath to face questions about Piker — whose record of antisemitic, pro-terrorist and otherwise offensive commentary has dogged Democrats nationwide.
Several other party figures, including Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan, the Democratic candidate for Senate, and Gov. Tim Walz, as well as the state Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party, did not respond to requests for comment over the weekend.
Fateh, who is hosting the event featuring Omar and Piker as “special guests,” said last week that RSVPs had sold out within five minutes.
The event will come just weeks after a federal search of Omar’s home, in connection to an alleged investigation into her immigration status and application. That raid drew widespread condemnation from Democrats.
