Left-wing House members among the first celebrating Walz pick
Israel critics like Reps. Mark Pocan, Ilhan Omar and Jamaal Bowman quickly cheered the Walz pick; he also won support from Dem moderates
Prominent left-wing House Democrats were among the first congressional lawmakers to celebrate Vice President Kamala Harris’ selection of Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz as her vice presidential pick, reflecting how Walz had become the consensus preference among progressives over Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro.
Some of those vocal Walz boosters are also among the Hill’s most outspoken critics of Israel.
Rep. Mark Pocan (D-WI) noted that he and Walz had served together in the House before Walz became Minnesota’s governor, saying, “Great guy. Real deal authentic midwestern values. Gets big things done. Going to make JD Vance look like a used couch salesman.”
Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN), who hails from Walz’s home state, highlighted the governor’s record on school meals, paid family and sick leave, marijuana legalization and abortion rights and said he’s “bringing Minnesota nice to the ticket.”
Rep. Jamaal Bowman (D-NY) posted a selfie video, shouting, “it’s Walz baby, let’s go!”
Dear White Staffers, the anonymous progressive Instagram account run by a staffer for Rep. Summer Lee (D-PA), which has become among the most prominent anti-Israel platforms in Washington and helped organize the anti-Shapiro campaign, took a victory lap upon Harris’ announcement.
“WE F***ING DID IT WE F***CKING WON LETS GO LETS GO LETS GO!!!!!” the account posted when news of the pick leaked, adding later, “Celebrate today and keep pushing. We can’t let up. We did this. It took all of us.”
The account also shared posts linking the Walz pick to Shapiro’s positions on Israel.
This reaction from the anti-Shapiro camp is likely to heighten concerns that the Walz pick will embolden the anti-Israel far left.
But Walz also received accolades from across the Democratic Party.
Shapiro said in a statement that Walz “is an exceptionally strong addition to the ticket who will help Kamala move our country forward.”
Sen. Joe Manchin (I-WV), among the most conservative Democratic-aligned lawmakers in Washington, said that Walz “will bring normalcy back to the most chaotic political environment most of us have ever seen” and “bring balance back to the Democratic Party.”
Rep. Ritchie Torres (D-NY), an outspoken supporter of Israel who criticized the anti-Shapiro campaign, said that Walz is “an affable and sensible Midwesterner with a bonafide appeal to the swing voters we need to win the election in November.”
Democratic Majority for Israel PAC Chairman Mark Mellman said that he’s “thrilled to congratulate” Walz on his selection, highlighting Walz’s “strong record of supporting the U.S.-Israel relationship” in the House and as Minnesota’s governor, as well as expanding Holocaust education and opposing pro-Hamas protests.
Jewish Democratic Council of America said it’s “ridiculous” to claim that Harris passed over Shapiro because of his positions on Israel, adding that both Walz and Harris “share Gov. Shapiro’s strong support of Israel.’
And Yinam Cohen, Israel’s consul general in the Midwest, said that it’s “been an honor to work with Governor Walz on deepening the Israel-Minnesota partnership. Thank you… for standing with Israel during our darkest hour on Oct. 7.”
