Satmar Factions Endorse Hillary in NY Primary

NEW YORK – Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton earned the endorsement of the two Satmar factions in Kiryas Joel and Williamsburg in the New York presidential primary next Tuesday.

“We endorse and urge all our people, who are registered Democrats, to come out and vote for the longtime Jewish-friendly Hillary R. Clinton,” a full-page ad in “Der Blatt,” Satmar-Aharonim’s weekly newspaper, reads.

“Der Yid,” a weekly newspaper representing the Williamsburg-based Satmar faction (Zalis), endorsed Clinton in an editorial on Thursday. “It is important to demonstrate our ‘Hakarat Hatov’ (the Hebrew term for gratitude) for Mrs. Clinton, whose help for Jewish interests had far-reaching effects back when she was First Lady in the White House, ” the editorial (written in Yiddish) reads.

As proven in previous elections, both Satmar factions – a community that votes as a bloc vote based on its leaders’ recommendations – are worth around 17,000 votes in a Democratic primary.

The New York primary is on April 19. Clinton leads Bernie Sanders by 24 points among Jewish voters, according to the latest Siena poll.
