The Anti-Defamation League on Wednesday welcomed Donald Trump’s unequivocal rejection of bigotry and hate in a speech on Tuesday.

“We will reject bigotry and hatred and oppression in all of its many ugly forms,” Trump said at a campaign rally in Wisconsin and carried live on TV.

Trump posted a similar statement on his Facebook page on Tuesday. “This is my pledge to the American people: as your President I will be your greatest champion,” the statement read. “I will fight to ensure that every American is treated equally, protected equally, and honored equally. We will reject bigotry and hatred and oppression in all its forms, and seek a new future built on our common culture and values as one American people.”

For months, ADL CEO Jonathan Greenblatt has been urging the Republican presidential nominee to “clearly and unequivocally” disavow the support from David Duke and white supremacist groups so that concerns of what is perceived as his tepid denouncement of anti-Semitic supporter are put to rest.

“Anti-Semitism has no place our society, which needs to be united, not divided,” Trump said in a laconic statement to the New York Times in May. But since then, Trump came under fire for tweeting an image of Clinton and a Star of David created by a racist Twitter user and circulated by white-supremacists. Trump refused to apologize.

In a statement to Jewish Insider on Wednesday, Greenblatt said, “It’s a good sign and an important, clear rejection of hate. We hope that in the months ahead Mr. Trump and all the candidates will live up to this welcome statement.”
