Obama Attends Fundraiser at Home of Soros Junior

President Barack Obama on Monday attended a fundraiser for the DCCC hosted by Jonathan Allan Soros, the son of George Soros, and his wife Jennifer, at their apartment in New York City.

The President, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and Congressman Steve Israel addressed the crowd, who each contributed $10,000, or $33,400 per couple. Representatives Carolyn Maloney and Jerry Nadler also attended.

While acknowledging the Democratic pols in the room, Obama said he wanted “to single out Jerry (Nadler) for his courage and tenacity and being willing to take some really tough votes.” The president was likely referring to the Jewish congressman’s support of the Iran nuclear deal. “And one of the things that I’ve been proudest about over the course of the last several years, and nobody exemplifies that more than folks like Jerry and others who have taken some tough votes here. Democrats are politicians too. You have to worry about constituencies and polls, and trying to get reelected. But we tend to pay attention to facts and we tend to pay attention to evidence, and we actually listen to reason and arguments. And if it’s something that is the right thing to do, even if it’s tough politically, we do it. And the country is better off for it.”

“Our work is not done. It’s not enough for us to just elect a Democratic president,” Obama said. “I will do everything I can to make sure that I’ve got a Democratic successor. But that Democratic successor is going to need a Congress that is working with the President to advance the values and causes that we care deeply about.”

During another high-dollar fundraiser at the Richard Rogers Theater later the evening, the president mocked the Republican presidential candidates for complaining about the harsh treatment they received from the CNBC anchors during last week’s GOP debate. “They say, when I talk to Putin, he’s going to straighten out. And then it turns out they can’t handle a bunch of CNBC moderators,” Obama said. “If you can’t handle those guys, I don’t think the Chinese and the Russians are going to be too worried about you.”
