NYT’s Peter Baker Leaving Jerusalem Bureau to Cover Trump

Peter Baker, the New York Times Bureau Chief in Jerusalem, is returning to Washington, DC next month to cover the Trump White House.

“The Trump Effect has spread. The NYT has asked Peter to come back to Washington to cover the Trump White House and Susan is going to work from DC as Politico’s chief international affairs columnist while also consulting with them about editorial innovation initiatives,” Baker wrote in a message on his Facebook page. “It’s been a terrific if much too short adventure for all of us in Jerusalem — and we’re lucky to have made many new friends in these last few months. Our schedule isn’t set but we’re expecting to get back to Washington next month.”

Baker was named as the publication’s Jerusalem Bureau Chief in January 2016 after covering the Obama White House since 2008. He replaced Jodi Rudoren, who was promoted as a deputy on the international desk.

His first dispatch from Jerusalem was published on August 28.

The Times also announced on Monday that it has hired Politico’s Glenn Thrush to cover the incoming Trump administration. “We’re thrilled that Glenn Thrush is joining The Times,” Elisabeth Bumiller, the paper’s Washington bureau chief, said in a statement. “He’s a premier political journalist, a master of breaking news and long-form story telling and a stellar addition to our White House team.”
