About: Jewish Insider is a digital news publication covering U.S. politics, philanthropy and business news with a particular focus on Jewish political power and influence. Jewish Insider’s readership comprises civic and communal leaders from across the ideological spectrum. In addition to coalescing an otherwise segmented community each day around the news, we aim to introduce new ideas, initiatives and individuals to our readers via original reporting.

About the role: JI is looking for a sharp, aggressive, and enterprising reporter to own the New York City mayoral beat, covering Mayor Zohran Mamdani and his new administration. The ideal candidate is able to turn around copy quickly, display strong political instincts, demonstrate knowledge of Jewish communal, and have the drive to break news daily in one of the country’s most consequential political arenas.

Responsibilities:

  • Based in New York City, the reporter will work closely with JI’s national politics team and editors to deliver fast, authoritative coverage of Mayor Mamdani, his policy agenda, political alliances, and the broader implications for New York’s Jewish community and national politics.
  • Generate exclusive stories, enterprise features, and quick-hit news items for Jewish Insider’s website and flagship Daily Kickoff and Daily Overtime briefings.
  • Cultivate sources inside City Hall, Albany, progressive activist circles, the DSA ecosystem, pro-Israel organizations, and the broader New York Jewish communal world.
  • Conduct on-the-record interviews with the mayor, senior administration officials, council members, activists, donors, and other key players.
  • Track the intersection of City Hall decisions with Jewish institutional interests, antisemitism concerns, public safety, education policy, and U.S.-Israel relations.

Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated reporting experience (preferably 2+ years) with a track record of breaking news and developing sources in political or government beats.
  • Sophisticated understanding of New York City politics, progressive movement dynamics, and Jewish communal/Institutional landscape strongly preferred.
  • Exceptional news judgment, intellectual curiosity, and ability to write clean, lively copy on tight deadlines.
  • Proven ability to navigate and cover ideologically charged stories with fairness and precision
  • Excellent social skills, persistence, and a competitive streak. Digital-first experience and familiarity with newsletter production are pluses.

Compensation: Competitive salary and benefits commensurate with experience and qualifications in the range of $60,000 – $95,000, plus medical, dental, vision, and other benefits.

Job type: Full-time (New York City-based; regular presence at City Hall required)

To apply: Please send a resume, cover letter, and 3–5 clips to [email protected]
