The next election for Prime Minister of Israel may well be kicking off in New York this week, as Yesh Atid chairman Yair Lapid is expected to visit the U.S. the same day Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is landing in NY to address the UN General Assembly.

Lapid, one of Israel’s opposition leaders, will meet with U.S. officials in Washington, DC, and deliver a speech at the Israel Policy Forum in NY, sources told Jewish Insider.

Netanyahu is expected to arrive in NY on Tuesday and leave Saturday night. The prime minister will address the UN on Thursday at noon and meet with U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry.

The last time Lapid was in New York, attending the Jerusalem Post annual conference, he presented his own diplomatic vision for the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, calling for a regional summit, based on the guidelines of the 2002 Arab League Initiative. He expanded on that last week in a speech at Bar Ilan Univesity, the same location Netanyahu presented his endorsement of the Two-State solution in 2009.

Lapid has already announced that he plans to challenge Netanyahu in the next elections, he hopes will take place in 2016. He recently hired U.S. branding expert Adam Hanft to help craft his image and establish himself as a prime ministerial candidate. Hanft worked for President Barack Obama’s successful campaign in 2008 as an unpaid digital adviser.
